More about pure grow wool

In Sonoma County, California, a regimen of stringent controls was adopted years ago to establish what is known as PREMIUM ECO WOOLtm. The result of this program is a distinctive line of woolen products, scrupulously cleaned and created without bleaches, formaldehydes, dyes, or animal cruelty by more than 200 California wool ranchers. Be assured that our wool-filled products at Phoenix Organics Eco-bedroom are made in the USA from Premium Eco Wool. The growers participating in the program follow responsible and healthful farming practices to create a superior and "pure" product, which is easily distinguishable from the current standards.

Pure grow wool

The production of Premium Eco Wool and the bedding derived from it has a lasting beneficial impact on our natural environment as well as your personal sleep environment. Wool fiber fills and batting provide the most comfortable and healthful microclimate for the human body at rest.

Because wool fibers are uniquely spiral, they create tiny pockets of insulating air that absorb moisture like a sponge. In a comforter, wool's springy, resilient fibers trap an abundance of air to create a layer of insulation that evenly maintains body temperature. Wool's fiber-and-air combination in mattress batting cushions the body and shields it from irritating pressure points.

It's a surprising fact that beneath a comforter, the average person perspires as much as a pint of water during an eight-hour period of sleep. But wool absorbs and wicks away large amounts of moisture vapor before the feeling of wetness disturbs sleep. The effect of wool's "natural climate zone" is advantageous in a pillow, which receives especially large quantities of body moisture.

A study constructed by two leading European institutes confirms wool's superior comfort, demonstrating the lowering of heart rate, decreasing humidity and regulating body temperature. And under both warm and cool sleeping conditions, wool fill wicks away body moisture better than down, cotton, or synthetic fibers.

Because wool dries so quickly, dust mites don't like it. So our products that contain our Premium Eco Wool are especially resistant to dust mites.

Premium Eco Wool is chemical Free:
  • Free of pesticides and chemical free
  • No Carbonization process, which is toxic chemical regular wool, is cleaned with.
  • Washed 5 times in hot water.
  • Most people do not have any allergic problems with our wool because it does not contain chemicals (formaldehyde or carbonic acid).
  • What makes Premium Eco Wool premium? The Premium Eco Wool standard requires that the fibers chosen are between 1" - 1 1/2" in length. It is this length which helps maximize the wools resilience, resulting in the best all natural bedding products available. It is the Premium requirement in Premium Eco Wool that gives our products a quality that is unmatched by other natural materials.
Premium Eco Wool Program:
  • The wool is completely untreated.
  • The wool is purchased at healthy prices to support local farmers.
  • Rotational grazing and responsible land management
  • No pesticides in the pasture.
  • No chemicals in the feed.
  • No tattooing or dyeing of sheep.
  • The shearing room is kept clean, free of dust, pests and dirt.
  • No chemicals are used to clean the wool. The wool is soaked to remove loose matter and then washed twice with a biodegradable detergent. Premium Eco Wool is not carbonized. Carbonization is a process used by conventional wool in which they use acids to process it. Some people have allergic reactions to these acids.
  • Carefully inspected for length, strength and purity, all of the characteristics of the finest wool.
  • The sheep are handled with the utmost care. They are fed a complete healthy diet. And they constantly consider the health of the sheep. There is 1 1/2 to 2 acres per animal. No sheep is denied care if it becomes ill.
  • The sheep are free range sheep. They are free to roam on the properties around Sonoma County, California.

Environmental Benefits:
  • Supports sustainable business practices.
  • Wool is biodegradable.
  • Resists dust mites and mildew.
  • Naturally flame retardant without using chemicals.
  • Encourages farmers to take care of the land in a way that protects the health of people and the environment.
Wool is a natural insulator that helps regulate the body temperature to help provide a better night's sleep:
  • Wool will not overheat or under heat you.
  • Handles moisture better than any other fiber without losing its insulating properties.
  • Wool wick away moisture and dries quickly, which is important since you lose approximately one pint of moisture per night
  • Wool is a natural fire retardant.
  • Wool does not provide a favorable environment for mold, mildew, or dust mites.
  •  Fibers that are 1 to 1 1/2" long are selected in the Premium Eco Wool Program. This maximizes the loftiness and actually makes a big difference in the quality of the bedding products.
The Superior Qualities of Wool
Several factors contribute to the comfort wool provides and the measurable beneficial impact it has on the quantity and quality of sleep. Wool is a natural insulator that helps regulate the body temperature to help provide a better night's sleep.
  1. Wool will not overheat or under heat you.
  2. The springy, naturally resilient wool fiber batting structure contains an abundance of air. This fiber/air combination acts to cushion the body and prevent the formation of annoying and often painful pressure points.
  3. Handles moisture better than any other fiber without losing its insulating properties. Wool has the ability to absorb large amounts of moisture vapor without feeling wet and clammy. The average person gives off a pint of water vapor as perspiration during an eight hour sleep period under a comforter. The ability of the fiber to handle this moisture is very important. Wool wicks away moisture from the body. The responsive fiber responds according to your temperature changes.
  4. Long Lasting. Wool can bend itself 20,000 times without breaking. It lasts for years without losing its resilience.
  5. Dust Mite resistant. Wool dries very quickly and dust mites don't like dry places.
  6. Wool is a natural fire retardant.
  7. Naturally mildew and mold resistant.
  8. The wool fibers "natural climate zone" effect is especially advantageous in a pillow. Large quantities of body moisture are produced in the head area. The moisture and the pressure of the head are concentrated in a relatively small area, with head weight and movement tending to force the moisture down into the pillow filling.
  9. Wool is the most perfect insulator. Insulate without over heating. Historically used in both climates. The heat of the desert and the coldest arctic climates. Wool is worn in many areas of the world to keep warm, yet the Bedouins of the Sahara wear wool because it keeps them cool. The tiny air pockets inside the wool fibers provide natural insulation.
  10. A study conducted by the Ergonomics Unit at the Polytechnic Institute of Wales confirmed that a wool filled comforter is more comfortable than the equivalent in weight and construction of synthetic comforters. The physiological data showed that:
    •  The heat rate under the wool filled comforter was significantly lower 100% of the time.
    • The humidity next to the skin under the wool comforter was significantly lower 71% of the time.
    •  The temperature rise of the skin above 91 degrees, which is considered to be the optimum level for sleep comfort, was significantly higher under synthetic filled comforters 80% of the time.
  11. Results from a study at the Hohenstein Research Institute in Germany showed similar results. The findings illustrate that it is not just the construction of the comforter that makes it the best fiber to sleep on or under, but that there is an inherent benefit offered by the wool fiber itself.
  12. Wool versus Synthetic Fibers: Because micro-fibers and synthetic fibers contain smooth fibers, they do not offer proper support. They do not resist each other when they come into contact with each other. As a result, synthetic fibers bottom out when body weight is directly applied. They cannot support the body weight as well, nor distribute weight away from pressure points of the body. Synthetic materials also do not absorb moisture. Fiber breakage is also a problem over time. And of course, with synthetic fibers, you don't get the "natural climate zone" effector the resilience like you do with the wool.
  13. Wool Versus Down: Goose down, which is usually a mix of the soft underbelly plumes and feathers, provides more support than smooth synthetic fibers, but still tends to bottom out under body weight. Therefore, it does not support or distribute the body weight away from the pressure points of the body. Down can absorb moisture but it does not dry quickly which can make it wet to the touch and very uncomfortable to be in contact with it. We are also concerned about the cruelty and treatment of the animals when they are raising them and plucking the feathers off. We use Premium Eco Wool in our mattresses and bedding products.
  14. Supportive yet soft.

Due to its physical structure and its natural chemical make up, wool fill handles body moisture under warm and cool sleeping conditions in a manner superior to any competitive cotton, down or synthetic fiber. Down and cotton have the additional disadvantage of losing their loft as they become damp.
