More about OSMO Gloss Wood Stain:

This finish looks almost like paint. But it won't crack, flake, peel or blister. No primer is needed, even with woods such as cedar and redwood that stain through some other finishes. And when it's eventually time to repaint, a new coat of Opaque Gloss Wood Stain can go right on, without scraping or sanding.

Because the finish is microporous, any moisture that does get through can also evaporate without causing the finish to peel. This stain works well in rooms with high humidity, such as kitchens and bathrooms, and on outdoor wood such as garden furniture.

OSMO makes two solid-color stains. This gloss product can be used indoors and out, but it comes only in white and pastels. The other product, Wood Wax Finish Opaque, is limited to interior use but comes in deeper colors.

Benefits of OSMO Opaque Gloss Wood Stain:
a. Environmental benefits include:
  1. Made mostly from readily renewable, natural ingredients.
  2. Meets European safety standards for use on children's furniture and toys and resistance to perspiration and saliva.
  3. Contains no biocides or preservatives.
  4. Only solvent is aliphatic low-odor mineral spirit, the safest effective solvent.
b. Practical benefits include:
  1. Extremely high solids content—85 percent.
  2. Easy to apply—usually just two coats; sometimes three on dark surfaces. Does not raise the grain of wood, so there's no need to sand between layers of finish.
  3. When it's time to repaint, just clean, dry and brush on a new layer. No sanding or scraping.
  4. Won't peel, rub or flake off.
Coverage:
One liter covers about 200 square feet. On new wood, to get the recommended two coats, figure on 1 liter per 100 square feet.

Application guide:

a. Preparation:
Surfaces, including previously stained wood, must be dry and free from loose particles of old paint, wood fibers, dirt, dust, grease and mildew. Iron must be free of rust and grease.

If the surface was previously coated with a glossy paint or varnish, roughen the old finish with sandpaper.

b. Application
Indoors, open windows and make sure ventilation is good. Outdoors, apply only in dry weather. The surface must be dry and free of frost. Stir thoroughly. Do not thin.

Use a stiff, natural-bristle brush. OSMO brushes are ideal because of their short bristles. Apply one thin, even coat. Brush in the direction of the wood grain. Allow to dry for 12 hours, then apply a second coat. A third coat might be needed for white applied to a dark surface. Make sure windows are completely dry before you close them.

Cleanup
Clean brushes with mineral spirits or the benzene-free OSMO Brush Cleaner.

Storage
Can be stored up to five years or more. Store in a dry place. Frostproof.

Ingredients
This product is about 85 percent solids (the part that remains on the surface when the finish dries):
  • Base—natural vegetable oils (sunflower and soybean).
  • Pigments—iron oxide, organic pigments and titanium dioxide (white), all approved for use in the food sector in Germany.
  • Additives—water repellents and lead-free drying agents.
The remaining 15 percent consists of solvents: aliphatic low-odor mineral spirits that meet the German standard for purity.
